What to Do After a Massage: simple aftercare tips

A few easy habits in the hours after your massage help you keep that loose, relaxed feeling longer, especially after deep tissue.

Right after your massage

  • Drink some water. It's a simple way to feel refreshed after lying still for an hour or more.
  • Get up slowly. Take a moment before standing, especially after a long or very relaxing session.
  • Take it easy. If you can, plan a quiet rest of the day rather than rushing straight to something stressful.

For the rest of the day

  • Have a warm shower or bath. Warm water helps your muscles stay relaxed. You can leave the massage oil on for a while if you like.
  • Stretch gently. Light stretching for the neck, shoulders and back helps keep them loose.
  • Skip the hard workout. Save heavy lifting or intense exercise for the next day, especially after deep tissue.
  • Eat something light if you're hungry, and get a good night's sleep.

Is it normal to feel sore?

After deep tissue massage, the areas that were worked can feel a little tender for a day or so, similar to after a good workout. That's common and usually fades quickly. Swedish massage rarely leaves any soreness. If you had cupping, round marks on your back are normal and fade over a few days.

Next time: tell your therapist how you felt afterwards. If you were sore, they can use a little less pressure. If you wanted more, they can go firmer.

How often should you book?

There's no fixed rule. Many guests come every two to four weeks to keep on top of desk-job tension, and others book whenever they feel tight or need to unwind. Our full menu lists every length and price.

When to call a doctor

Mild tenderness is normal, but contact a doctor if pain is sharp, gets worse over the next day or two, or you notice swelling, numbness or bruising you didn't expect.
