The Best Massage for Back Pain: which should you book?

Most everyday back pain comes from tight, overworked muscles: long hours at a desk, driving, lifting or a hard workout. Here's how to pick the massage that helps most.

The short answer

Book a deep tissue massage if your back feels tight or knotted and you like firm pressure. Book Swedish if your back is sore and sensitive, or you'd rather keep the pressure gentle. For most people with desk-job neck, shoulder and lower back tension, a 60 or 90 minute deep tissue session is the best place to start.

Why deep tissue works well for back tension

Deep tissue uses slower strokes and steady pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle along the spine, shoulders and hips, where tension tends to build up. Your therapist spends extra time on the areas that need it rather than covering the whole body evenly. It should feel firm but not painful, and you can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any time.

Add-ons that help your back

  • Hot stone ($20): warm stones relax the muscles before deeper work. It's free with a 90-minute deep tissue massage.
  • Cupping ($30): suction cups along the back lift and loosen tight areas. They can leave round marks that fade over a few days.

Our recommendation: the 90-minute deep tissue massage ($140) with a free hot stone add-on. It leaves time for the whole back, neck and hips, and then extra work on the tightest spots.

Which length?

30 minutes is enough for one area, like the neck and shoulders. 60 minutes covers the whole back properly. 90 minutes is best if your back, neck and hips all feel tight. More in 60 vs 90 minute massage.

When to see a doctor first

Massage is for everyday muscle tension, not a replacement for medical care. See a doctor before booking if your back pain follows an injury or fall, is severe or getting worse, spreads down your leg, or comes with numbness, weakness or fever. If you have a medical condition, mention it to your therapist when you arrive.
